The Way of Suffering of the Cross

The Way of Suffering of the Cross (Via Dolorosa). It was drawn following the rigorous plan pf the Way of Suffering of the Cross in Jerusalem, sent by Father Jérôme (a Franciscan). The work of this Way of the Cross, which is 4 meters wide and 80 centimeters high, linking the Praetorium (Scala Santa) to the Calvary, was entirely done by the local women from 1891 on.

24th June 1893 was the date of the inauguration and of the blessing of the blessing of the five first stations of the Way of the Cross. These as the following ones were composed of the chiselled cast iron. One can read the date of the inauguration of the 8th station (the only complete one) which took place on Whitmonday 1894.

7th March 1895 - 500 women of Saint-Roch and Saint-Joachim formed a chain of basket to bring earth and stones up the top of the Calvary.

24th June 1895 - Blessing of the 7th station.

8th September 1895 - Inauguration and blessing of Adam's Grotto under the Calvary.

20th April 1896 - 250 women of Savenay used picks and shovels and passed each other basket filled with sand and medium-sized stones to built the basis of the crosses.

20th May 1896 - A heavy cross was placed on top of the Calvary.

15th June - The 3 other statues representing the Deprivation were placed.

This same day, 15th June - Some women of La Roche Bernard placed the Sufferring Virgin at the foot of the Cross.

17th June - More than a hundred women of Blain placed the statue of St John.

End of July 1896 - The 12th station was completed. However the nex representation of the Christ and the statues wich were complete the group of monuments were still being awaited.

March 1897 - The path descending from the Calvary to St Sepulchre was almost finished. The St Sepulchre was built. The 13th station was placed.

8th September 1897 - On this date, 80 parishes gathered to work on the building of the Calvary. The 1st, 9th and 14th stations were still not represented.

17th March 1898 - The group of the 14th station, the Entombment in the Sepulchre, was placed.

28th April 1898 - Blessing of the monument of the St Sepulchre and of yhe grouo of the "Entombment in the Sepulchre" on Whitmonday.

On the date of 8th June - 150 parishes had already come to join in a work pilgrimage at the Calvary.

18th July 1898 - 4 statues representing the Condemnation of Jesus were temporarily placed in the "Pretoire".

On February 1899 - The 9th station was placed. But about 10 statues were still missing on the Way of Suffering.

24 June 1899 - Solemn blessing of the Calvary under the presidency of cardinal Richard, archbishop pf Paris. 50 000 people prayed together in a great clamour. "It was like clpas of thunder rumbling in the distances. Was it that the voices of the thousands of workers of the past two centuries, the voices of all the friends of the Calvary since 1709, were joining hte voices of the pilgrims to give their cheers an incredible intensity?"
